Only 5% of people who walk into an AA meeting will remain sober for more than a year. This statistic should scare the living hell out of you. However, a 5% success rate doesn’t illustrate that AA is a failure, only that alcoholism is a dangerous, deadly disease.
The 95% who don’t recover will end up in jail, an institution or dead. For whatever reason, they couldn’t sit in a chair. One out of seven people in the US struggles with addiction at some point. It takes a lot of grace and courage to find a seat in the rooms. It takes even more to remain seated. So be grateful for your seat and remember all those who aren’t lucky enough to sit where you sit.
