Be honest, the minute you hear Keith Richard’s name, you picture a grizzled old rock and roll party legend. Recent reports now say he’s quit drinking, or mostly quit drinking. So which is it?
In Rolling Stone Magazine, Richards said, “It’s been about a year now. I pulled the plug on it. I got fed up with it.” But Richards says he occasionally has a glass of wine or a beer. It sounds like the waffling back and forth many of us do before admitting a problem or actually quitting for good. There was no flashy rehab involved in Keith’s quitting, but the whole announcement is a bit ambiguous.
Fellow Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood officially got sober in 2010 after decades of substance abuse. He says Richards is more mellow now that he’s sober. “The Keith that we used to know and love had this cutoff point where if he had one more, he’d go over the top and he’d be nasty,” said Woods. “The cutoff point became shorter and shorter, you know, and he realized that.”
When one of us lesser known plebs decides to quit, big announcements make us accountable, but they also scare the shit out of people. So for now, we still don’t know if Keith is one of us, or just hedging his bets.
