Self care means taking care of your mind, body and soul. Self care falls by the wayside in active addiction. We don’t get enough sleep, we don’t eat well. Hell, we don’t even shower as much as we should. The opposite of self care is self harm. Alcohol consumption is destructive to the body; it causes cancer, depression, anxiety and death. Drinking alcohol is not self care.
Self care is vital to recovery. Some people mistake self care for selfishness and that couldn’t be further from the truth. If you don’t take care of yourself first, you don’t have anything left over for your family, friends and loved ones. Drowning your pain in alcohol is the opposite of self care. In recovery, we finally find the time to take care of things long neglected, like a visit to the dentist, getting our bloodwork done or taking vitamins. We resume old hobbies that bring us pleasure. We go on bike rides with the kids.
Abstaining from a deadly addictive drug is the ultimate form of self care. Your body, mind and soul will thank you for it.
