Alcohol is a leading cause of death worldwide. If you’ve dedicated a long period of your life to drinking, you have certainly seen some of your comrades fall. You might have watched a bar buddy turn yellow, bloat up, and die of cirrhosis. Maybe your neighbor never made it home from a camping trip after rolling in the ditch. That old high school friend who died from esophageal cancer. Yep, if you drink long enough, you’re going to experience some casualties.
If you’re in recovery, congratulations on surviving the war thus far. And make no mistake, recovery is a fight for your very life. You will watch others less fortunate lose the war, even in recovery. And you should treat your recovery with all the seriousness it deserves, as a life or death situation. Never underestimate your enemy, alcohol.
